Blackbutt Reserve

Plan a low-cost family day at this City of Newcastle reserve across Kotara and New Lambton. Entry to the wildlife exhibits is free, with picnic facilities, shelters, barbecues, nature walks and playground areas also available. Wildlife exhibits open daily from 10 am to 4.30 pm, while picnic facilities open from 7 am to 7 pm. Vacation-care and community groups can book holiday activities in advance, subject to group-size limits.

Newcastle Museum

Families can explore the museum’s permanent exhibitions with free general admission, then look to its events calendar for children’s activities, story-based experiences and school-holiday programs. Some events and temporary exhibitions need tickets or advance bookings. Newcastle Libraries

KinderGym is for ages 18 months to five years, Junior Gym serves ages four to five, and GymSTAR provides recreational gymnastics for school-aged children. PCYC Newcastle also publishes holiday programs for ages five to 12. Trials, enrolment arrangements, fees and annual Gymnastics NSW registration requirements differ between classes, so confirm the relevant conditions before attending.

Newcastle Jets School Holiday Programs

These football clinics run at venues across the Hunter and welcome children who are just beginning as well as those already playing for a local club. Options include girls-only clinics, a Mini World Cup and goalkeeping masterclasses. 👶 Parenting and child development

First Steps Parenting Centre

Eligible families in the Newcastle, Port Stephens and Lake Macquarie local government areas can receive clinic-based assistance and optional home visiting through Hunter New England Local Health District. Areas of support include infant sleep, settling and feeding, play and development, toddler behaviour and other parenting concerns, with selected parenting groups also offered. A referral is required. Access to its paediatrician and speech pathologist is available only through an internal clinician referral.

Hunter New England Local Health District — Community Based Speech Pathology

This service provides intervention for eligible children from birth to school age who live in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie or Port Stephens local government areas. Eligibility is restricted: children funded through the NDIS Early Childhood Approach for a disability-related speech condition, or assessed as eligible for the NDIS while awaiting funding, cannot access this particular service.

Embrace Neurodiversity

Children, adolescents and adults can access occupational therapy, speech pathology and disability support from this Autistic-led provider. Parents, carers and educators may also seek education and practical support. Delivery is mobile and by telehealth across Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, rather than being presented as a Newcastle walk-in service.

🤝 Family and youth support

Family Support Newcastle — Family Support Project

Families living in or around Newcastle with children aged up to 12 in their care can seek information, individual assistance, supported playtime activities and group programs. Support may take place at home, at the family centre or another suitable venue. The project works with circumstances such as financial hardship, isolation, family violence, mental health concerns and children’s additional needs. Enquiries and referrals are handled through reception.

Wesley Mission — Newcastle Youth & Family Support

Young people aged eight to 18 and their families can access community-based casework and facilitated group programs when additional support is needed. The young person must live in, or attend school in, the Newcastle local government area. Support is generally available for up to six months, giving families a defined period in which to work on identified needs.

Hunter New England Local Health District — Youth Services

The Youth Engagement Service offers brief intervention and links to appropriate services for young people aged 12–17 and their families or carers. Its Youth Health Team is a free, confidential service for ages 12–18, prioritising young people who are homeless, at risk of homelessness or have limited family or caregiver support. Coverage includes those who live, work, study or spend time in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie or Port Stephens.

Relationships Australia NSW — Children’s Contact Service

At Broadmeadow, the Children’s Contact Service supports separated parents or carers and children when families cannot safely manage contact arrangements themselves. It provides supervised visits and supported changeovers. Each parent must complete registration, and service bookings are made by phone.

Newcastle Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service

Women and their children in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie can seek information, support, advocacy and referrals relating to domestic and family violence and court protection processes. The independent local service has specialist workers supporting Aboriginal women, women from multicultural backgrounds, older women and women with disabilities. Assistance can include support while attending court.
